What Actually Determines Whether Your Panel Can Take an EV Charger

The charger is the easy part

Homeowners and small business owners in Payne County ask us about EV chargers expecting the conversation to be about which charger to buy. It rarely is. The charger itself is a relatively simple piece of equipment. The real question is always whether the electrical panel and the service feeding it have room for another significant load.

That question doesn't change much between a house and a small business lot, it's still fundamentally about whether the existing service has room for one more significant, steady load.

What a Level 2 circuit actually asks for

A home or business charger that runs on what's called a Level 2 circuit needs a dedicated circuit of its own, run in cable or conduit sized for the draw, protected by its own breaker, and landed on a panel that has both an open slot and enough total capacity left to carry it alongside everything else already running. It is not something that gets added onto an existing outlet or shared with another appliance's circuit.

The amperage a Level 2 circuit draws varies by the equipment installed, and it draws that amperage steadily for as long as a vehicle is charging, which is different from an appliance that cycles on and off. That steady draw is part of what makes panel capacity the real constraint, a circuit that only needs to handle a brief spike is a different design problem than one that holds a load for hours at a time.

Why the panel is the real question

An older panel that's already running close to its rated capacity, feeding a house or shop that has grown its electrical load over the years, may not have room left for a dedicated charging circuit without a broader look at what else is on it. In some cases that means adding a subpanel. In others it means the same panel and meter conversation that comes up with any service upgrade. Either way, this gets evaluated before a charger gets ordered, not after.

What a subpanel adds to the project

When the main panel doesn't have room for a new circuit but the service itself has capacity to spare, a subpanel gives a house or shop a second set of breaker slots fed from the main panel, which is often a smaller job than a full service upgrade. It's a middle option between doing nothing and replacing the whole panel, and which one makes sense depends on how much spare capacity the service actually has, not just how full the panel looks.

Where the charger should physically go

The charger's location is driven by where the vehicle actually parks and how far that is from the panel, since a longer run means more conduit, more wire, and more labor. For a house, that's usually the garage wall closest to the panel or a driveway facing exterior wall. For a shop or small commercial lot, it's wherever vehicles actually park to charge, which is worth walking through in person rather than guessing from a floor plan.

What to check before you order hardware

  • Confirm your panel's total rated capacity and how much of it is already spoken for
  • Confirm there's a physical open slot for a new breaker, not just spare capacity on paper
  • Decide where the vehicle will actually park to charge, before measuring the wire run
  • Ask whether local permitting applies to the installation before scheduling the electrical work
  • Get the electrical side evaluated before ordering a specific charger model, so the circuit is sized to match it

What this looks like for a small business lot

A shop or small commercial property asking about charger installation is usually looking at a different scale of question than a house, since a lot with several parking spaces and a panel sized for lighting and a few pieces of equipment may need more than one dedicated circuit if more than one vehicle is expected to charge. That's a conversation about how many chargers, not just one, and it changes the panel and service question accordingly.
